Exciting news from Bluesky Innovations! We are embarking on some exciting and ambitious commercial design projects and are looking for great people to join our design team.

You will work with a high performing team to create inspirational products, services, and experiences that shape the future of our clients’ industries.

We are a Nairobi-based design firm that is building our future through human-centered design. We are a group of creatives, provocateurs, and problem-solvers who believe that empathy and designing for humans is the key to unlocking true innovation. We love to delight, inspire, and create through the solutions we design for our clients that solve real needs, thoughtfully approach problems in new ways, and deliver innovation that changes our world.

Interaction Designer

The Role in a Nutshell

Bluesky Innovations is out to solve some huge problems through human-centered design. As such, we recognize that effective technology isn’t always about having the most advanced features, but about making that technology more human. This is where you come in – we are looking for someone passionate about designing elegant user experiences, who loves recognizing the needs of people, and able to speak to those needs through the design of clear and beautiful digital and analog interactions.

We’re not using the term “UX/UI Designer” because we believe Interaction Designers transcend that title – Interaction Designers understand and design for experiences, behaviors, and simplicity, can think on a bigger systems level, and don’t just see “users” but people. Interaction Designers at Bluesky Innovations will join a team of other creatives who think from diverse perspectives to design and build truly innovative and holistic human-centered solutions to compelling challenges.

You love…

  • Creative thinking and problem-solving

  • Crafting compelling stories

  • Designing and prototyping digital experiences and interfaces, including websites, apps, and other digital and physical experiences with the end user in mind

  • Communicating your ideas through sketches and/or digital wireframes

  • Imagining new uses for technology to address challenges or barriers

  • Designing for people and using empathetic approaches to design

  • Working in teams and thrive in collaborative settings

  • Holding yourself to high design standards and are always seeking to improve yourself

What we’re looking for…

  • A strong portfolio of past visual and interaction design work

  • Training in or a background in design (UX/UI Design, Interaction Design, Graphic Design, New Media, Human-Centered Design, or similar qualification)

  • Comfort and experience using a variety of graphic design and interactive tools (for example, the Adobe Creative Suite, interactive prototypes with Sketch, Flinto or Axure, click-throughs with Keynote, animations with AfterEffects, etc

  • Familiarity with coding and/or understanding of architecture for web and mobile experiences (JavaScript/CSS/HTML, Objective-C, etc.) and familiarity collaborating with developers

  • Team Skills – strong ability to work comfortably in teams; naturally collaborative

  • Communication Skills – ability to communicate ideas effectively; strong verbal and visual presentation skills

  • Systems Thinking Skills – ability to think big picture and analyze complex problems, then communicate about them in simple ways. Comfort working with other perspectives and design disciplines to collaboratively create holistic design solutions

  • Prototyping skills – You are ready to learn from failure, embrace an iterative process and you understand that success comes sooner with trial and error. You have experience in creating both low and high fidelity design deliverables for print and screen.

  • Openness: Designers need to be flexible and open-minded. You are optimistic, generative, and open to new ideas and ways of working

  • Experience with human-centered design approach or a willingness to learn and embrace HCD Design methodologies

Communications Designer

The Role in a Nutshell

Bluesky Innovations is out to solve some huge problems through human-centered design. As we problem-solve, we know that it’s not always about the solution itself, but how the solution is communicated. Humans are visual people, and if done right, visual language can communicate not only the right ideas, but the right feelings, beliefs, and aspirations. This is where you come in – we are looking for someone passionate about using visual language to bring our solutions, stories, and ideas to life.

You’ll be part graphic designer, part systems thinker, and part visual storyteller that will collaborate with the rest of our team to design beautiful and effective solutions. You have your own style and personality that you bring into your visual work, but you are also adaptable and sensitive to the needs of the person you are designing for. Whether working with print graphics and layout, branding identity, illustration, or other design assets, you will bring visual flair, new ideas, and a good heart to our team. Communications Designers at Bluesky Innovations will join a team of other creatives who think from diverse perspectives to design and build truly innovative and holistic human-centered solutions to compelling challenges.

You love…

  • Creative thinking and problem-solving

  • Crafting compelling stories

  • Communicating your thoughts in a visual way, and your first instinct is to share your ideas using sketches instead of words

  • Using graphic design to create projects across different mediums, including print, packaging, branding, iconography, illustration, spaces and/or digital screens

  • Experimenting and pushing yourself to explore different ideas, even if they don’t initially make sense

  • Inspiring others and yourself through images, and enjoy creating inspiration/mood boards or challenging others through new visual ideas

  • Designing for people and using empathetic approaches to design

  • Working in teams and thrive in collaborative settings

  • Holding yourself to high design standards and are always seeking to improve yourself

What we’re looking for…

  • A strong and diverse portfolio of past visual work, ranging across mediums from illustration, to print layout, branding/iconography, presentations, etc

  • Training in or a background in graphic design, communication design, visual arts, or similar qualification and a strong understanding of design and visual fundamentals (color theory, form, type, layout)

  • Keen attention to detail and a refined level of visual craft

  • High level of comfort and experience using the Adobe Creative Suite, most notably InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, as well as any other visual design software

  • Comfort working with a range of mediums, including print, web, illustration, iconography/branding, presentations, etc.
