BeadWORKS enhance lives, and protect wildlife and habitats in northern Kenya by empowering pastoralist women through a sustainable, social enterprise.
BeadWORKS enterprise provides over 1300 women in northern Kenya with a reliable and sustainable income through traditional beading skills rather than livestock grazing, charcoal production and other environmentally damaging activities. Translating this handicraft into much needed income also lessens their reliance on the land, and in turn reduces competition with wildlife for natural resources, especially during times of drought. Our women artisans understand the importance of protecting local wildlife and the benefits they bring through conservation and tourism. This connection with wildlife is what makes BeadWORKS initiative unique.
In addition, BeadWORKS meets women where they are and makes it possible for them to retain their semi-nomadic lifestyles. Our products are handmade by individual artisans in their communities, not in factories. For this reason, each piece is unique and authentic with a touch of the artisan’s own design. Not only do our women take pride in their one of kind pieces, so do our customers. BeadWORKS powerful story brings meaning to their purchase and is a conduit for giving back.
