On Tuesday of this week , the much anticipated, new collection by Sandstorm and Maison-Château Rouge was launched at The Alchemist Bar, Nairobi. Featuring a selection of curated African fabrics and high quality Kenyan leather, this was something different to what we’ve seen before. Maison-Château Rouge were originally founded as a social enterprise in Paris, with the belief that they wanted to help restore respect and credibility to their area of the city, one that had been traditionally underappreciated.
In just two years, they’ve established their wax clothing as the hot new label to follow in the world’s fashion capital. They’ve done it within an unapologetically African style, challenging stereotypes in a city that’s known for wearing black, white and grey. The two brothers who founded the business, Youssouf and Mamadou Fofafana have created a number of trendy collaborations and opened their own store in Paris. Each year, they plan to focus on a particular region, country or style to keep their collections fresh, while they also utilise what’s available in their local African fabric market in northern Paris.
The launch was sponsored by Kenya Airways, who ensured the entrepreneurial Maison Chateau Rouge team made it to Kenya, and attended by some veterans of the Kenyan fashion scene. We’ll be waiting to see future work from the exciting new designers, and keeping you updated on what’s coming from Sandstorm Kenya.
