Nairobi Design Week’s Holiday Gift Guide

MADE IN KENYA: Holiday Gift Guide

There’s so much great design coming out of Kenya these days that there’s no way we could cover everything, but we wanted to inspire you for the holidays and give you some ideas before the new year. Whether for friends, family or yourself, we hope you find something here that makes someone’s life better.

We’ve split the list into three sections- fashion, furniture, cards & gifts. None of the listings below were sponsored, we just love their work.

Happy holidays!

FURNITURE

LOVE ARTISAN

They had one busy year, taking part in an enormous amount of markets and events in Nairobi as well as managing to take their Barrack Obama chair all the way to Kisumu when the former US president visited.

SABA LAMU

The beautiful Lamu style that’s literally engrained in every Saba piece makes them feel that could be passed down through generations. You can find the story behind them here.

WORKSHOP NAIROBI

Their mission is to help small-scale furniture manufacturers improve the quality and design of their products and to create new markets for their goods.

GIFTS & CARDS

LULU KITOLOLO STUDIO

Well known for her incredible illustrations, which can be found on anything from phone cases to bookmarks, notebooks, postcards and greetings cards. You can find their products at the Made in Kenya Store, Sandstorm Kenya stores (Sarit, The Hub, Village Market, Yaya); Polka dot Gallery; Wasp & Sprout; and Republi_ke.

KULULA

Whether you’d like a ready made card or something to colour in, Kulula has you covered, and they even do calligraphy workshops!

SEEDLING KENYA

Sustainable lifestyle, interior and product design converge with baobab lamps, natural oils, greetings cards and much more.

WHITE BULL KE

As featured in the Design Directory, what impresses us most is how they form leather into such incredible shapes, creating triangular bowls and round clocks out of the same material.

ERREGATTI

If you didn’t see their excellent display at this year’s Nairobi Design Week, be sure to check out some of our favourite Kenyan made sketchpads and notebooks.

FASHION

BONK

One of Kenya’s staple brands for over a decade, the giftshop that has everything from Kenyan made board games, t-shirts, cards and much more. Check out their website and store at Junction Mall.

KIKO ROMEO

The brand that inspired many others made a big comeback this year with Iona McCreath making appearances at Lagos Fashion Week and Kisumu Fashion Week, with a hand crafted new collection that has been worn by some of Kenya’s biggest stars.

SOKO

Soko support artisans through training and sell a wide selection of Made in Kenya jewellery at home and abroad. They appeared at this year’s Nairobi Design Week.

ANYANGO MPINGA: FREE AS A HUMAN

Anyango has built a reputation for beautiful, slow fashion and meaningful campaigns.

#FreeAsAHuman is a Rally Against Human Trafficking. 100% of Profits Are Donated to A Shelter For Young Female Survivors of Trafficking at HAART Kenya.
