Placemaking Week Nairobi 2017: Bringing Nairobians together in public spaces

Today marks the beginning of Placemaking Week Nairobi, celebrating the city’s public spaces through community-led activities. The annual event, an initiative of Nairobi City Council, leverages on the expertise and experience of a large network of partners to bring together Nairobi’s citizens and inspire action.

The week begins today and tomorrow with Share the Road Day, with Banda Street being temporarily pedestrianised and made accessible for a number of activities, including street painting, exhibitions and performances.

PAWA254 will be the venue for an Urban Dialogue discussion on Friday evening, while Kilimani Street Festival and Kilimani Concert will take centre stage on Saturday 18th. The week will culminate on Sunday in a skating marathon on City Hall Way.

We have been supporting the team at Placemaking Week by creating the brand identity for the festival, which you can see below. This just a small first step in showing how design can support the transformation of Nairobi into a more beautiful, liveable and welcoming city. It is imperative that designers become involved in working directly with public figures, policy makers, experts, engineers and other professionals, which is why we intend on supporting initiatives such as this wherever possible.

Below is the full calendar of events. We’ll see you there!
