Tatu Gatere is an architect and the Kenya Country Director of Kounkuey Design Initiative, she has over ten years of professional experience with a career focused on exploring the intersection of architecture, urbanism, and culture both locally and internationally, in a variety of socio-economic and cultural contexts.

James Mitchell

Founding Director

Visionary architect James Mitchell founded Orkidstudio in 2008, determined to bring the benefits of professional design and high quality construction – healthy dignified living and working spaces – to the people who really need them, disadvantaged urban and rural communities around the world.

James has specialist expertise in the design and delivery of projects within the healthcare, education and housing sectors, in remote, highly challenging and underdeveloped environments.

Adam Reineck

As Global Design Director at, Adam focuses on guiding projects and initiatives through the lens of design excellence. Adam has broad experience in product design, service design, and brand strategy and has worked in partnership with social enterprises and foundations on challenges related to energy, water and sanitation, healthcare, and financial opportunity.

Bonnie Mbithi

General Manager
WEEE Centre

Bonnie Mbithi a young, self-driven and hardworking young man who has successfully served as the General Manager at The WEEE Centre and Computers for Schools Kenya for roughly 5yrs. An experienced Leader with a demonstrated history of working with an NGO, E-waste management, ICT and services industry. Skilled in International Law, strategic management, Operations Management and a Global youth leader, an alumnus of Coady International Institute in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Bonnie is passionate about giving back to the community and protecting the environment against harm, precisely contamination by e-waste.

Tosh Juma

Nairobi Design Institute

Tosh is the founder and creative director of the Nairobi Design Institute, an impact design academy incubated by Dalberg Design based in Nairobi. NDI’s mission is to drive the future of innovation and impact in Africa through the power of design education. We are piloting a model that builds capacity and opportunity for the next generation of creative leaders on the continent where students address complex challenges through new design practices and deep community engagement. NDI welcomed it’s first class of students in April, 2017.

Fady Rostom

Fady brings over 12 years of creative design leadership in brand and interaction design. His background in engineering adds structure, texture and energy to his work. His extensive branding knowledge and experience has let Fady lead some of the most successful campaigns and design projects in the region, including Nike, MTN Uganda, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Equity Bank and Zuku among others.

Märta Terne

Better Shelter

Märta is the head of communications at Better Shelter, a Swedish social enterprise that develops temporary homes for the millions of people who have fled to escape armed conflicts and natural disasters. Before joining Better Shelter, Märta studied and worked in France, Thailand, India and the UK. She has a Bachelor’s Degree from Kingston University and likes art, politics and good food.

Leonard Schürg

Leonard is a design engineer, dedicated to turn the tide around and create a sustainable balance between us and our hosting biosphere. His experience in product development ranges from microscopic parts and plastic composites to large solar constructions. In all his projects, he is determined to care for, and promote the environment. He grew up in Germany, studied and worked in the Netherlands, and in 2016 washed ashore in Kenya.

Esther Kute

Product Development Manager

First female Product Development Manager and youngest senior manager at Bata Shoe Company (Kenya) Ltd. Lives-Breathes-Design. Cars lover. Design educator and mentor. Trained as a Textile & fashion designer. Experienced in fashion design, product design, industrial design and footwear design. Product development from concept ideation to mass manufacturing and launching product in the market.

Transfer of design knowledge to amateur, upcoming and design students through teaching and mentorship.

Katharina Elleke

Katharina is a industrial design student graduate from the University of Applied Sciences in Munich. In everything she does, sustainability and eco-friendliness are most important. She designs utilitarian products and features, which make our environment and people’s lives better and more beautiful. Another big part of my life is traveling and getting to know other people, other languages and other cultures.
