The work of Wolfgang Tillmans occupies a prominent position in the contemporary art world. Ever since his first exhibitions and publications in the early 1990s Tillmans’s artistic approaches have continually developed. He is constantly redefining photography both as an image and as a material artifact, be it in the museum space or as an object on the printed page. Tillmans visual language derives from precise observation that reveals a deeply human approach to the complexity of the world. Familiarity, empathy, friendship, and intimacy are all visible and tangible in his pictures.
The exhibition provides a comprehensive overview of the multi-skilled work of Wolfgang Tillmans and contains more than 200 works from 1986 to 2017. Large-scale prints, smaller photographic prints, sculptural objects and tabletop installations are part of this exhibition as well as video projections and publication projects.
A never-ceasing curiosity, rigorous research , and a devotion to photography as a medium and its technicality and aesthetic potential informs Tillmans artistic work.
Tillmans narrates that embracing fragility is a key component to who we are as individuals and how we relate with each other, that this is not our weakness -but a great strength. He uses failure, disruption, and frailty as impulses to develop new processes. They refer to the imperfect nature of our lives and they reveal unanticipated perspectives on their materiality. In these ways, Fragile highlights precious moments in life and the meaning of social and family ties, in particular in times of social and political instability.
