Every year we focus on a new theme, which starts a number of short and long term projects, and becomes a part of our values.
The theme for 2020 is “Design is for Everyone!” and we’re fine-tuning our schedule and festival production more than ever.
Our hub venue this year is Lava Latte (209 Statehouse Road), home to a number of remarkable organisations, including MGM Studios, Igabantu Studios, Kara Kana and more.
10 female speakers whose work will be featured at the festival, introduce themselves on International Women’s Day!
Speakers will include: Anastasia Njeri (BuildHer), Abba Arunga & Leah Otieno (Lava Latte), Njeri Gikera (Pop Up n Chill), Rosemary Wangari, Wairimu (Y’Rimu Collection), Wanjiku Murigi (HISI Studio) and a performance by Bakhita, combining performance art by Naitiemu!
MC for the night will be Musangi Judith, who completes a hat-trick of festivals by picking up the mic at NDW2020!
This year we’re bringing ideas to life, Afrika Design comes back in a totally new format: a LIVE interactive collaboration with the creative community!
The space at 209 Statehouse Road, surrounding Lava Latte will be invigorated with creative interventions, turning the outdoor areas, including the basketball court and courtyard, into colourful, vibrant spaces. Socialise, dance and enjoy live entertainment as you get creative and leave a legacy.
You will not only watch it all happen in front of your eyes, you’ll get to collaborate with guest artists, designers and musicians to see it all come together by helping us restore the space and make a music video!
Afrika Design #PaintTheCourt during #NDW2020 will bring together visual #artists, performance artists, musicians, photographers, skaters and designers for a creative Jam Session!
This will be a platform for creative collaborations, and what we learn will be turned into a community toolkit that will be shared online after the festival, with those involved credited.
We can’t wait to see what they will create!
MADE BY KENYA TOUR
TUESDAY 10th & WEDNESDAY 11th: All day
To the outside world, creatives can seem like they hide behind closed doors, and at the same time they want more exposure and a better appreciation of what they do. The best way to do this is to see them in their habitat!
Every year, the NDW Community welcomes visitors into multiple creative spaces that organise events and hands-on activities to give an insight into their work.
Organise an ‘open day’ event & activity which will be promoted to the NDW Community. This can be an entire day (or two!), with shorter, scheduled activities, such as a demonstration, creative workshop or exhibition launch, which you can charge for.
This year’s 2 day experience will bring visitors to places they’ve been meaning to go, and ones they may have never heard of. Visitors can participate for FREE!
This year’s #NDWTour has already confirmed:
BuildX Studio (NOW WEDNESDAY 2-4PM)
A curated selection of productions from upcoming filmmakers, Kenyan Animation content, ASMO features and more!

If you parents and teachers don’t already know it, join the younger generation on a fun journey that will make you all stand out from the crowd!.
FRIDAY: Industry Meet & Learn: Hands-on sessions with industry mentors, an opportunity to ask questions, get feedback and learn how to forge a career in the creative industries!
If you are an educational institution, and would like to take part, you can do so in several ways!
The week will finish with a family-friendly, creative event, bringing together art, design, music, food and more.
‘Pop Up n Chill’ at Nairobi Design Week 2020 will bring together multiple creative communities in one place, allowing visitors to shop and get their weekend chill on, while getting hands on in workshops and activities!
Exhibition basketball games for all ages, will take place on the restored basketball court organised by Beyond Hoops Africa. Performance artists, singers and even rollerskaters will grace the stage. It’s also your last chance to meet those that took part and made it happen!
We are also partnering with Sandstorm Kenya to give a limited number of people the opportunity to get on the #DesignMatatu, where they’ll spend a day visiting behind the scenes at featured stops.
As a featured stop during one of the #DesignMatatu tours, you’ll get to welcome a group of visitors, share your process and gift a souvenir. (Limited spaces for stops & visitors. Apply early.)
The format will be slightly different to the #DesignMatatu we ran with Thinkplace Kenya in 2016. Check out the video below by Katie G Nelson to see what they got up to!
ADMISSION PAID. LIMITED TICKETS AVAILABLE!
Design Matatu visitors are invited to join the NDW’s team and partners for a meet up over food and drinks to discover how they might collaborate!
As well as curated exhibits from the community, we’ll have even more NDW projects on display!
Every day during Nairobi Design Week 2020, starting with the launch, every person who registers their name at the entrance will get the chance to win a Sandstorm Kenya bag!
If you don’t win one day, come the following day to get another opportunity!
Note: Designs may vary, but we have some of the ones shown below!
We’re partnering with Sandstorm Kenya to fill 30 of their bags with curated ‘Made by Kenya’ products & brands, which you’ll be able to purchase soon.
These will be limited edition and sold during the festival, so keep an eye out for more information!
